What Is Immunity According to Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, immunity is called *vyadhikshamatva*, which means the body’s natural ability to resist diseases or recover quickly. Unlike the modern view of immunity as just fighting germs, Ayurveda sees it as a balance of the body, mind, and spirit. It is deeply tied to *ojas*, considered the essence of vitality and the foundation of good health.

*Ojas* results from proper nourishment and strong digestion (*agni*). It gives us physical strength, mental resilience, and the ability to stay healthy. When *ojas* is strong, immunity is robust; the body becomes more prone to illnesses and fatigue when weak.

Ayurveda indicates that several key factors shape immunity:

1. Agni (Digestive Fire): A strong digestive system ensures proper hunger and nutrients are absorbed, directly building *ojas*. Weak digestion produces toxins (*ama*), which can lower immunity.

2. Dosha Balance: The harmony of the three doshas (*vata*, *pitta*, and *kapha*) is essential for a healthy body. Imbalances can disrupt normal functioning and make the body vulnerable to diseases.

3. Diet and Lifestyle: A *sattvic* lifestyle, which includes eating freshly prepared, wholesome food while focusing on eating, regular appropriate exercises according to the season and weather, proper sleep relevant to time and age, restricted time on social media, and living a purposeful life, is key to building immunity.

4. Mental Health: A calm and focused mind, free from unnecessary stress, strengthens *ojas*. Emotional well-being is as important as physical health.

5. Seasonal and Daily Routines: Following *dinacharya* (daily routines) and *rutucharya* (seasonal routines) helps the body stay in tune with nature, boosting its ability to adapt and stay healthy.

Ayurveda focuses on prevention rather than cure. By strengthening *ojas* through mindful living, balanced eating, and holistic care, we can build a strong immune system that strengthens the body and mind, protects against diseases and promotes overall well-being and longevity.
